‘Ehtidar’: Black Surrealistic Image of Kuwaiti Young Man’s Aspirations

The Kuwaiti Cinema Club will soon screen the film Ehtidar (Verge of Death) directed by Jassem Yacoub to mark his debut in direction after six years of unemployment he spent after graduation.
The film belongs to the short narrative genre, as its screening time is only 17 minutes. The scenes were shot at various locations in Egypt and the film’s cast included only young Egyptian actors.
“The film cost amounted to more than 50,000 dollars I shared with the Egyptian Cinema Institute which encourages its graduates. It depicts a black surrealistic image of a young man and the society’s outlook towards his aspirations,” Yacoub told the London based Arabic daily al Sharq al Awsat, adding that he might have reflected his personality and battle in life through the script of this film he wrote.
Three actors were given the starring roles in the film in addition to other auxiliary roles by other actors. The three key actors included Akram al Shabouri, May Fakhri (devil woman) and Sally Ahmed (Nour) who played the role as Shabouri’s girl.
Explaining why he shot his film in Egypt and not in Kuwait, the young director said, “Egypt has all the cinema tools which Kuwait lacks. Also shooting any film in Kuwait regardless of its length would require much bigger budget than the one he allocated for the film in Egypt.”
Yacoub stated that he had stayed jobless for more than five years without finding anybody to take interest in his talents. He added that he was about to loose his talent and willingness to shoot one film or more. So, he says, he preferred to take the move by himself and seek help from the Egyptian Cinema Institute where he submitted the film’s script to the officials there in his capacity as a graduate of the institute.
He then made an agreement with the institute to share the expenses of the film as a support by the institute to one of its former graduates.
The Kuwaiti director expressed his sadness over his country’s negligence of film making while he finds other countries interested in his talent. He reiterated that the misevaluation of cinema as a cultural work by his country is the biggest obstacle the filmmakers face there – 67d16d.com
