Syrian Mohammed Malass to Direct Egyptian FilmSyrian director Mohammed Malass will begin next November shooting his film Otlet Radwan (Radwan’s Holiday), marking his debut in the Egyptian cinema, according to the Arabic daily Al Sharq Al Awsat. The director has nominated the Egyptian actor Noor El Sherif to star in the new film. The film is scripted by Sayyed Said and is based on a novel by Abdo Adib. The story explores the conditions that prevailed in the Egyptian City of Port Said in the fifties. The film’s shooting will take 8 weeks, according to the paper. But the artist, known for his deep history and distinguished experience in the Syrian cinema industry is worried. “I am really scared of this experience because it is my first in the Egyptian cinema. This is due to the fact that all the cast are Egyptians, which is a challenge to me,” Malass told the daily. The director denied rumors that he had stopped work on a TV series on the legendary Egyptian composer, Sayyed Darwish. Reports have alleged that Darwish’s family threatened to go to the court. He said, “the matter was no more than a delay by scenarist Mahfouz Abdel Rahman, who failed to deliver the script as he is being busy wrapping up the fourth part of the series Bawabat Al Halawani, expected to be aired next Ramadan.” He anticipates no objection on the part of the Darwishes voicing “confidence in the objectivity of the author and his respect for the renowned composer.” -- 301ad0.com Egyptian Censors Omit Israeli Flag Scene From ‘Shabab A’la al Hawa’The chief Egyptian censor denounced the turmoil sparked by the director of the film Shabab A’la al Hawa, in protest for the omission by the censors of the film’s scenes that convict Israel.Gala Fahmi’s Artistic Hibernation Baffles DirectorsEgyptian actress Gala Fahmi has suddenly decided to stay away from acting until further notice in order to “reorganize herself”New York Times Calls Shahin Film ‘Reckless, Buoyant Hodgepodge’Egyptian director Yousef Shahin’s new film Sukout Hansawar (Silence…We're Rolling) was recently screened at the New York Film Festival 2001, drawing slightly befuddled but largely positive reviews.Omar al Sherif to Shoot ‘Devilish Whispers’ Based on Mahfouz’s StoryEgyptian director Nader Galal has nominated film star Omar al Sherif for the starring role in his upcoming film Hamasat Shaitaniya (Devilish Whispers) based on Naguib Mahfouz’s story.‘Wedding by Presidential Decree’ Calls for Change of RegimeThe Egyptian comedy film Gawaz Bi Qarar Gomhuri (Wedding by Presidential Decree) includes a call for the president to change the regime for the interests of the working class in the country.Sadat’s Ghost Threatens Comedy FilmsThe Egypt Distribution Company is asking three comedy stars, Adel Imam, Mohammed Heneidi and Alaa Waley Eddin, to postpone the release of at least one of their films to lessen box-office competition this summerEgyptian Box Office Receipts to Fuel IntifadaThe team behind a new Egyptian movie, Ashab Wala Business (Friends or Business), has decided to contribute a day’s box office revenues each week to the Palestinian cause. |
