Cruise, Cruz Set to Hit Theaters in Thriller ‘Vanilla Sky’Cameron Crowe's thriller Vanilla Sky hits US movie theaters December 14, giving filmgoers their first chance to see real-life couple Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz on the big screen. The film, a remake of Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar's 1997 Abre les Ojos (Open Your Eyes), stars Cruise as a rich and influential New York ad executive who falls for Cruz's Sofia, a young Spanish ballet dancer. But an encounter with a suicidal ex-girlfriend played by Cameron Diaz and a subsequent car accident leave Cruise's character horribly disfigured and plunged in a surreal and confusing Big Apple. "A few years back, Tom saw 'Abre los ojos' -- he loved it, and bought the rights" to produce a US version of the film, Amenabar told AFP during a recent visit to Los Angeles. Cruz is the link between the two films -- she stars in the same role in both versions. Cruise first asked Amenabar to direct the new film, but he refused, instead opting to direct the supernatural thriller, The Others, which starred Cruise's ex-wife, Australian actress Nicole Kidman. Crowe reworked the story, telling the US magazine Entertainment Weekly it was "like a song our band really liked." "We decided to cover it our own way," he explained. The film's upcoming release has been upstaged in the media by the real-life romance between its co-stars, who appeared together in public for the first time in August, just a week after Cruise and Kidman's divorce became final -- AFP Egyptian TV Produces Film on Archbishop CapucheThe Egyptian TV is currently producing a film on the life history of Archbishop Capuche, the Vatican representative and diplomat who sympathized with the Palestinian issue.Kazem al-Saher to Produce his First FilmKazem al-Saher signed recently a contract with the Egyptian International Production City to produce his first movie in which he will sing and actHebrew Translation of ‘Destiny’ Not in the Cards, Say EgyptiansEgyptian TV’s guardian bureaucrats have refused to allow the historical series Al Aqdar (Destiny) to be translated into Hebrew.Anoshka and Wael Kfouri to Debut on Silver ScreenEgyptian singer Anoshka and his Lebanese counterpart Wael Kfouri will make their debut on the big screen in the film Jahim Fawq Al Sahab, costarring Laila Taher and Salah AbdullaNadin to Play Domineering Woman Saddled With Lame HusbandSyrian actress Nadin has recently started shooting the new TV series Jilnar, in which she plays a domineering woman whose wimpy husband drives her crazy with his pathetic complexes.Shireen Seif Al Naser Seeks LoveEgyptian artist Shireen Seif Al Naser is shooting her latest film Shay Minal Hobb (Some Love) alongside Farouq Al Fishawi and Sahar Rami. |
